On many machines the QNX Neutrino 'shutdown' utility will not power off the hardware, or reboot the machine, as it would when running Windows, for example.

The explanation is that a method for shutting down the hardware is often very system specific. This can be seen by examining the Linux kernel shutdown code, where dozens of boards specific cases are present, with different code for different models of PC. The Neutrino shutdown utility invokes a function called sysmgr_reboot, which in turn causes the Neutrino Startup reboot callout to be executed. The reboot callout contains generic code which will shut down some PCs, but on many machines, you just have to live with powering it off manually, with the switch.
