For disk-based x86 systems, there are two levels of boot loader that locate and copy the boot file from the disk into memory.
These are:
ipl-diskpc1
This is called the primary or partition loader, which prints the the message "Press F1-F4 to select drive or select
partition 1,2,3?"
ipl-diskpc2
This is the secondary or OS loader, which prints the message "Hit Esc for .altboot", a bunch of dots and possibly an 'S' if no OS signature was found and 'D' if there is a disk error.
