QNX Sponsors EcoCar 2 Competition Established by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors

OTTAWA, September 12, 2012 QNX Software Systems Limited, a global leader in software platforms for the in-car infotainment and telematics market, today announced that it is a Bronze sponsor of the EcoCar 2: Plugging in to the Future competition. Established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and General Motors (GM), the competition challenges 15 universities across North America to reduce the environmental impact of a Chevrolet Malibu without compromising performance, safety, and consumer acceptability.

QNX Software Systems will provide teams with access to the QNX CAR 2 application platform, which serves as the foundation for the infotainment systems and digital instrument clusters being developed for the vehicle.

The QNX CAR 2 application platform is a pre-integrated software stack designed to reduce the time and effort of creating highly sophisticated and personalizeable in-car infotainment systems. The platform, which won a Best of CES 2012 award, is now being evaluated by select automakers and tier one automotive suppliers for use in next-generation infotainment systems.

The EcoCar 2 competition enables us to have a direct connection with the automotive engineers of tomorrow. We are excited to give them access to the same platform that is currently in demand by the worlds automakers, said Jin Xu, global education program manager, QNX Software Systems. The platform harnesses the benefits of HTML5, which has taken the automotive industry by storm, and when paired with the great minds of the EcoCar 2 competitors we know we are in for quite a ride!

During the program, EcoCAR 2 teams will be tasked to follow a real-world Vehicle Development Process (VDP) modeled after GMs VDP. The VDP serves as a roadmap for the engineering process of designing, building, and refining the teams advanced technology vehicles. Year One of the EcoCar 2 competition concluded in May in Los Angeles. Year Two kicks off in September with a Fall workshop hosted by EcoCar 2 participant, MathWorks, in Natick, Massachusetts.
