QNX Announces IEC 62304 Compliant RTOS for Medical Device Developers

Company expands product and service offering to help medical customers reduce time and effort of developing devices that require regulatory approval

OTTAWA, February 28, 2012 QNX Software Systems Limited, a leader in software platforms for connected embedded systems, today announced it is expanding its product and service offering to help medical device manufacturers reduce the effort of building infusion pumps, patient monitoring devices, blood analysis systems, MRI machines, robotically assisted surgery systems, and other safety-critical products that must pass regulatory approval.

The expanded offering will include the new QNX® Neutrino® Realtime Operating System (RTOS) for medical devices, to comply with the IEC 62304 medical device standard for software life cycle processes. The company is also offering on-site audits, proven-in-use data, training courses on designing dependable systems, and assistance to meet compliancy requirements.

“Medical device developers must deal with increased regulatory pressure, increased system complexity, and increased connectivity — and yet, they must create systems that remain simple and intuitive to use,” stated Grant Courville, director of product management, QNX Software Systems. “Leveraging our deep experience in embedded systems for medical devices and other safety-critical applications, we have created a suite of products and services, from training to consulting, to facilitate development efforts and to help customers meet compliancy requirements, such as those for the FDA 510k.”

The QNX Neutrino RTOS for medical devices is based on the QNX Neutrino RTOS, which has a proven history in medical systems for angiography, blood apheresis, laser eye surgery, hemodynamic monitoring, electrocardiography, and anaesthesia monitoring.

In addition to the expanded product and services offering, medical device manufacturers can also take advantage of the QNX® Momentics® Tool Suite, an Eclipse-based development environment with profiling tools designed for gaining maximum insight into software behavior. They can also leverage the wide range of processors, protocols, tools, and package solutions available through the extensive QNX® partner ecosystem.

Availability

The QNX Neutrino RTOS for medical devices is scheduled for release in calendar Q2 2012. Services mentioned in this release are available now.

Demos this week at Embedded World

This week, at stand 5-134, QNX Software Systems will demonstrate a patient monitoring system that features the QNX Neutrino RTOS, a graphical user interface based on the Qt framework, connectivity to Continua Certified™ medical devices (blood pressure monitor, weight scale, pulse oximeter, etc.), and wireless connectivity to a BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet.

A QNX expert in safety-critical applications will also be on hand to discuss industry standards such as IEC 62304, IEC 61508, and ISO 26262, and to share experiences in safety-critical certification.

Other demos include an M2M building automation system that features a remote web management console, and a QNX CAR™ 2 application platform demo that showcases an auto-centric HTML5 framework, natural language input, integrated navigation, rich multimedia support, Bluetooth® connectivity, and an acoustic processing library for hands-free systems.
