QNX to Support Intel Atom Processor E6xx Series

OTTAWA, September 14, 2010QNX Software Systems Co. today announced that it plans to extend its support for Intel® Atom processors to the new Intel Atom processor E6xx series, formerly code-named Tunnel Creek. As a result, embedded developers in the industrial and medical device markets will be able to combine the low power and improved I/O flexibility of these new processors with the proven reliability and realtime performance of the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS.

QNX Software Systems support for the Intel Atom processor E6xx series will include a human machine interface (HMI) suite based on Adobe® Flash Lite® technology by Adobe Systems Incorporated, hardware-assisted 2D/3D graphics based on OpenGL ES, and QNX® fastboot technology, which eliminates the need for a BIOS, thereby reducing system costs and dramatically improving instant-on performance. QNX fastboot technology won an “Award of Excellence, Most Innovative Software for the Intel® Atom Processor” from the Intel Embedded Alliance in 2008.

The Intel Atom processor E6xx series offers a new level of I/O flexibility by moving to the industry-standard PCI-Express as the processor-to-chipset interface.
The series can be paired with the Intel® Platform Controller Hub EG20T, which integrates a range of common I/O blocks, such as SATA, USB, SD/SDIO/MMC, and Gigabit Ethernet MAC, and which includes interfaces such as CAN, IEEE1588, SPI, I2C, UART, and GPIO.

“The introduction of the Intel® Atom Processor E6xx series demonstrates that Intel continues to make advances in low power, modular embedded designs that offer real value to QNX customers, particularly those in the industrial and medical markets,” said Linda Campbell, director of strategic alliances at QNX Software Systems. “The improved I/O capabilities of this new series, combined with the advanced graphics and ultra-fast boot times of QNX technology, offer new levels of design flexibility for embedded developers who need to combine low power with high performance and a rich feature set.”

“By offering off-the-shelf support for the Intel® Atom processor E6xx series, QNX Software Systems continues their long-standing track record of support for Intel® architecture to enable developers to hit the ground running with a robust and proven software platform,” said Jonathan Luse, director of marketing for the Intel Low Power Embedded Products Division.
