Siemens Selects IBVs QWin Virtualization Solution for the QNX Neutrino RTOS

News at a Glance...

  • Siemens deploys QWin realtime virtualization solution in high-performance mail-sorting machines.

  • QWin significantly reduces system costs and energy consumption by allowing the QNX Neutrino RTOS and Microsoft Windows to run on a single system.

  • IBV will demonstrate QWin next week at embedded world: Hall 11, booth 11-426.

  • OTTAWA and KOENIGSBRUNN, GERMANY, February 22, 2010 IBV and QNX Software Systems today announced that QWin, IBVs virtualization solution for the QNX Neutrino RTOS and Microsoft Windows, has been deployed by Siemens AG in more than 700 high-performance mail-sorting machines.

QWin allows the QNX Neutrino RTOS and Microsoft Windows to run concurrently on a single processor. As a result, designers of industrial systems can eliminate the cost of using a separate system to run a Windows-based human machine interface (HMI).

QWin preserves the hard realtime capabilities of the QNX Neutrino RTOS, allowing the Siemens mail-sorting system to achieve predictable, high-speed output while simultaneously running the customers Windows-based HMI.

The operational capability of the new QWin virtualizer and the easy integration to the control unit of the mail-sorting machine exceeded all our expectations, said the software development manager responsible for the project at Siemens AG, Mobility Division, Infrastructure Logistics. Thanks to the good documentation of QWin and constructive support from IBV, we quickly managed to run our existing QNX application with the Windows framework on a single PC. We are now reliably sorting about 30 million letters per hour with 750 machines at our customers premises.

IBVs QWin can run on a range of hardware, from low-price, single-core processors to high-end, multi-core chips. QWin also supports message-signaled interrupts (MSI), hyperthreading, and the Intel APIC (Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controllers) architecture.

QWin allows a single system to deliver the best of both worlds: the fault tolerance, high availability, and realtime performance of the QNX Neutrino RTOS with the familiar user interface of Microsoft Windows, said Kroy Zeviar, business alliance manager at QNX Software Systems. As a result, customers can deliver solutions that cost less, consume less energy, and require less space than conventional solutions that require one system for realtime control and a different system for the HMI.
