New Release of QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite Speeds Music and Video Content Delivery

News at a Glance...

  • Innovative middleware simplifies the design of in-car infotainment systems and other multimedia products.

  • New version enhances support for Internet streaming, album art, Microsoft Zune players, and video playback (MPEG-4, H.264, MPEG-2, H.263, etc.).

  • Offers significantly faster metadata synchronization and lower memory use.

  • OTTAWA, May 26, 2009 — QNX Software Systems today announced the latest version of its powerful multimedia middleware for in-car infotainment systems and other multimedia devices. The QNX® Aviage® Multimedia Suite 1.2 introduces enhanced support for Internet streaming, album art, Microsoft Zune players, DVD-V, and video playback; it also offers significantly faster performance and lower memory use for resource-constrained embedded designs.

The QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite 1.2 supports RTP and HTTP streaming, allowing devices to use Shoutcast and other Internet streaming media standards. Supported playlists now include iTunes, RMP (Real Media Player), and WAX/ASX.

Release 1.2 also improves support for album art. It now automatically performs fetching, caching, and thumbnail generation, eliminating the need for user code to perform these crucial steps. To retrieve album art from Apple iPod and Microsoft Zune players, the suite now offers both a synchronous and an asynchronous interface; the asychronous version prevents the user interface (HMI) from locking up if the device takes too long to respond. The suite also adds support for multiple images (front cover, back cover, liner notes, etc.) and larger image sizes.

Release 1.2 requires significantly less memory, especially when multiple clients are connected to the multimedia database. It also improves startup time to let the database load faster and uses optimized metadata synchronization algorithms to significantly increase the speed of metadata synchronization.

Release 1.2 also provides a new DVD navigator, which when combined with the video codecs from the optional Intel Performance Primitives package, provides DVD playback and supports MPEG-4, H.264, MPEG-2, and H.263 video formats.

A new optional package adds audio codec support for the TI OMAP 3 codec engine.

The QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite runs on a variety of 32-bit CPUs and DSPs, including ARM9+, SH-4+, PowerPC processors, and TI OMAP, and on automotive-grade hardware platforms from Freescale, Renesas, Texas Instruments, and Intel.
