QNX Extends Advanced Multi-core Support to Intel® Xeon® 5500 Platform for Embedded Computing

OTTAWA, March 30, 2009 — QNX Software Systems today announced that it will extend its advanced multi-core technology for carrier-grade communications applications to support the multi-core Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series.

The increasing performance demands of carrier-grade communications and security infrastructure are demanding more computing power than ever. Conventional single-core processors have to operate at speeds that exceed the limits on heat, footprint, and power consumption expected by customers. Consequently, networking equipment suppliers are turning to multi-core processors, which can deliver the required boost in performance while satisfying these demanding requirements.

QNX Software Systems offers the embedded industry’s most comprehensive and mature multi-core solution. To simplify migration to multi-core designs, the QNX Neutrino RTOS provides a choice of multiprocessing models, including symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) and bound multiprocessing (BMP). The QNX Momentics® Tool Suite provides powerful debugging and performance-visualization tools designed to optimize multi-core systems. Using this solution, software engineers can quickly build reliable, high-performance embedded products that utilize the new multi-core Intel Xeon processor 5500 series.

Based on 45nm process technology, the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series processors are available in quad-core and dual-core options with TDP ranging from 80W to as low as 38W and will support QNX multiprocessing.

QNX is positioned to support the new Intel 5500 Platform for embedded computing features, such as Intel Xeon Processor 5500 Series with Intel Turbo Boost Technology, Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, Integrated Memory Controller, Automated Low-Power States, and Intel Virtualization Technology and support for the associated Intel 5520 I/O Hub Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O feature set.
