Third Party License Terms Guide

QNX Software Systems incorporates certain third party software in our stack. The license terms associated with this software require that we give copyright and license information, and this Third Party License Terms Guide ("TPLTG") provides those details.

The third party software is used primarily in two areas. We use the GNU Compiler Tools, Debugger and GNU C++ libraries in the development suite. These applications are governed by the terms of either the GPL or LGPL, copies of which are reproduced below.

We also incorporate various third party software in our networking stack, mainly around the TCP/IP stack and related utilities.

As many of the licenses share common terms (the BSD license from the Regents of the University of California is the most common), rather than repeat the same text ad nauseam, we have abstracted those licenses. For unique licenses, we have provided the full license text.

The Artistic License

Preamble

The intent of this document is to state the conditions under which a Package may be copied, such that the Copyright Holder maintains some semblance of artistic control over the development of the package, while giving the users of the package the right to use and distribute the Package in a more-or-less customary fashion, plus the right to make reasonable modifications.

The X^32 term is "implied"; the LSB is the X^31 term, etc. The X^0 term (usually shown as "+1") results in the MSB being 1. Note that the usual hardware shift register implementation, which is what we're using (we're merely optimizing it by doing eight-bit chunks at a time) shifts bits into the lowest-order term. In our implementation, that means shifting towards the right. Why do we do it this way? Because the calculated CRC must be transmitted in order from highest-order term to lowest-order term. UARTs transmit characters in order from LSB to MSB. By storing the CRC this way, we hand it to the UART in the order low-byte to high-byte; the UART sends each low-bit to hight-bit; and the result is transmission bit by bit from highest- to lowest-order term without requiring any bit shuffling on our part. Reception works similarly. The feedback terms table consists of 256, 32-bit entries. Notes: The table can be generated at runtime if desired; code to do so is shown later. It might not be obvious, but the feedback terms simply represent the results of eight shift/xor operations for all combinations of data and CRC register values. OVERVIEW ======= = This package contains C software to implement JPEG image compression and decompression. JPEG (pronounced "jay-peg") is a standardized compression method for full-color and gray-scale images. JPEG is intended for compressing "real-world" scenes; line drawings, cartoons and other non-realistic images are not its strong suit. JPEG is lossy, meaning that the output image is not exactly identical to the input image. Hence you must not use JPEG if you have to have identical output bits. However, on typical photographic images, very good compression levels can be obtained with no visible change, and remarkably high compression levels are possible if you can tolerate a low-quality image. For more details, see the references, or just experiment with various compression settings. This software implements JPEG baseline, extended-sequential, and progressive compression processes. Provision is made for supporting all variants of these processes, although some uncommon parameter settings aren't implemented yet. For legal reasons, we are not distributing code for the arithmetic-coding variants of JPEG; see LEGAL ISSUES. We have made no provision for supporting the hierarchical or lossless processes defined in the standard. We provide a set of library routines for reading and writing JPEG image files, plus two sample applications "cjpeg" and "djpeg", which use the library to perform conversion between JPEG and some other popular image file formats. The TIFF 6.0 file format specification can be obtained by FTP from ftp://ftp.sgi.com/graphics/tiff/TIFF6.ps.gz. The JPEG incorporation scheme found in the TIFF 6.0 spec of 3-June-92 has a number of serious problems. IJG does not recommend use of the TIFF 6.0 design (TIFF Compression tag 6). Instead, we recommend the JPEG design proposed by TIFF Technical Note #2 (Compression tag 7). Copies of this Note can be obtained from ftp.sgi.com or from ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/jpeg/. If you are on a Unix machine, we highly recommend Jef Poskanzer's free PBMPLUS software, which provides many useful operations on PPM-format image files. A different free JPEG implementation, written by the PVRG group at Stanford, is available from ftp://havefun.stanford.edu/pub/jpeg/. This program is designed for research and experimentation rather than production use; it is slower, harder to use, and less portable than the IJG code, but it is easier to read and modify. Also, the PVRG code supports lossless JPEG, which we do not. (On the other hand, it doesn't do progressive JPEG.) FILE FORMAT WARS ======= ========= Some JPEG programs produce files that are not compatible with our library. The root of the problem is that the ISO JPEG committee failed to specify a concrete file format. Some vendors "filled in the blanks" on their own, creating proprietary formats that no one else could read. (For example, none of the early commercial JPEG implementations for the Macintosh were able to exchange compressed files.) The file format we have adopted is called JFIF (see REFERENCES). This format has been agreed to by a number of major commercial JPEG vendors, and it has become the de facto standard. JFIF is a minimal or "low end" representation. We recommend the use of TIFF/JPEG (TIFF revision 6.0 as modified by TIFF Technical Note #2) for "high end" applications that need to record a lot of additional data about an image. TIFF/JPEG is fairly new and not yet widely supported, unfortunately. The upcoming JPEG Part 3 standard defines a file format called SPIFF. SPIFF is interoperable with JFIF, in the sense that most JFIF decoders should be able to read the most common variant of SPIFF. SPIFF has some technical advantages over JFIF, but its major claim to fame is simply that it is an official standard rather than an informal one. At this point it is unclear whether SPIFF will supersede JFIF or whether JFIF will remain the de-facto standard. IJG intends to support SPIFF once the standard is frozen, but we have not decided whether it should become our default output format or not. (In any case, our decoder will remain capable of reading JFIF indefinitely.) Various proprietary file formats incorporating JPEG compression also exist. We have little or no sympathy for the existence of these formats. Indeed, one of the original reasons for developing this free software was to help force convergence on common, open format standards for JPEG files. Don't use a proprietary file format! TO DO ===== The major thrust for v7 will probably be improvement of visual quality. The current method for scaling the quantization tables is known not to be very good at low Q values. We also intend to investigate block boundary smoothing, "poor man's variable quantization", and other means of improving quality-vs-file-size performance without sacrificing compatibility. In future versions, we are considering supporting some of the upcoming JPEG Part 3 extensions --- principally, variable quantization and the SPIFF file format. I believe these routines are close to the fastest and most portable DES routines that use small lookup tables (4.5k) that are publicly available. The fcrypt routine is faster than ufc's fcrypt (when compiling with gcc2 -O2) on the sparc 2 (1410 vs 1270) but is not so good on other machines (on a sun3/260 168 vs 336). Direct algorithms are also available, but they are much more complex and seem not to be any faster when reduced to code. This implementation is based on Arai, Agui, and Nakajima's algorithm for scaled DCT. Their original paper (Trans. IEICE E-71(11):1095) is in Japanese, but the algorithm is described in the Pennebaker & Mitchell JPEG textbook (see REFERENCES section in file README). The following code is based directly on figure 4-8 in P&M. While an 8-point DCT cannot be done in less than 11 multiplies, it is possible to arrange the computation so that many of the multiplies are simple scalings of the final outputs. These multiplies can then be folded into the multiplications or divisions by the JPEG quantization table entries. The AA&N method leaves only 5 multiplies and 29 adds to be done in the DCT itself. The primary disadvantage of this method is that with fixed-point math, accuracy is lost due to imprecise representation of the scaled quantization values. A row group is defined to be max_v_samp_factor pixel rows of each component, from which the downsampler produces v_samp_factor sample rows. A single row group is processed in each call to the downsampler module. The downsampler is responsible for edge-expansion of its output data to fill an integral number of DCT blocks horizontally. The source buffer may be modified if it is helpful for this purpose (the source buffer is allocated wide enough to correspond to the desired output width). The caller (the prep controller) is responsible for vertical padding. The downsampler may request "context rows" by setting need_context_rows during startup. In this case, the input arrays will contain at least one row group's worth of pixels above and below the passed-in data; the caller will create dummy rows at image top and bottom by replicating the first or last real pixel row. The downsampling algorithm used here is a simple average of the source pixels covered by the output pixel. The hi-falutin sampling literature refers to this as a "box filter". In general the characteristics of a box filter are not very good, but for the specific cases we normally use (1:1 and 2:1 ratios) the box is equivalent to a "triangle filter" which is not nearly so bad. If you intend to use other sampling ratios, you'd be well advised to improve this code. A simple input-smoothing capability is provided. This is mainly intended for cleaning up color-dithered GIF input files (if you find it inadequate, we suggest using an external filtering program such as pnmconvol). When enabled, each input pixel P is replaced by a weighted sum of itself and its eight neighbors. P's weight is 1-8*SF and each neighbor's weight is SF, where SF = (smoothing_factor / 1024). Currently, smoothing is only supported for 2h2v sampling factors.
