QNX and SIAT CAS to establish Center of Excellence in China for Embedded Software Systems

Collaboration to enable reliable software designs for mass transit systems, power networks, telecommunications systems, and other infrastructure projects

BEIJING, June 12, 2012QNX Software Systems Limited, a global leader in software platforms for connected embedded systems, today announced that it will collaborate with the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, a branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIAT CAS), to establish a Center of Excellence for Embedded Software Systems. The goal of this collaboration is to enable the development of reliable and innovative software for a variety of industry sectors, including automotive, automation, healthcare, telecommunications, and transportation.

SIAT CAS is a leading research and educational organization in China charged with evaluating a variety of technologies that will impact society when implemented in infrastructure projects. SIAT CAS and QNX Software Systems have been engaged in joint seminars and activities since 2011 to educate the embedded market on the importance of safety and security with respect to realtime operating systems. SIAT CAS has also been evaluating QNX software technology for various projects.

QNX Software Systems and SIAT CAS have agreed to expand their collaboration to further educate researchers and engineers on QNX® technology and to jointly explore potential opportunities in the embedded software industry in China. Under the expanded collaboration, SIAT CAS will employ additional QNX software products to enhance research and education. For its part, QNX Software Systems will train SIAT CAS researchers and engineers on QNX technology on an ongoing basis to keep their technical knowledge up to date and will provide SIAT CAS with appropriate product updates. Both SIAT CAS and QNX Software Systems will assign project managers to work together on enabling the success of the joint project activities.

The QNX products employed by SIAT CAS include the QNX® Neutrino® Realtime Operating System (RTOS), which is recognized globally for its performance and reliability. It is used in many mission-critical systems, including power plants, medical devices, railway control systems, and Internet routers, as well as in millions of in-car infotainment systems. To achieve its superior reliability, the QNX Neutrino RTOS employs a modular microkernel architecture, which provides a flexible software foundation for a wide range of mission- and safety-critical systems.

“We are pleased to expand our relationship with QNX Software Systems to launch the Center of Excellence for Embedded Software Systems,” said Professor T. John Koo, the founding director of the Center for Embedded Software Systems at SIAT CAS and a QNX user since 1996. “Safety and security in critical infrastructures are key requirements in China. QNX software technology is known for its reliability and is a preferred choice for mission- and safety-critical systems.”

“QNX Software Systems understands the importance of collaboration between industry, government, and research institutions for the betterment of technology in China,” stated Kimm Krueger, director of Asia Pacific Sales and Marketing at QNX Software Systems. “We are proud to contribute our technology to SIAT CAS research to enable safe and secure system designs. We are looking forward to working together as we explore new opportunities in embedded industry in China.”
