QNX Targets Rugged Industrial Automation Environments with Extended Support for Intel Atom Processor Z5xx Platform

News at a Glance...

  • QNX Neutrino RTOS now supports industrial temperature range, larger footprint, and other new options of Z5xx platform.
  • Support includes Flash-based HMI player, hardware-assisted 2D/3D OpenGL ES graphics, and unique fastboot technology for instant-on applications.
  • For maximum performance, developers can now download the Intel C++ Compiler Professional Edition 11.0 for the QNX Neutrino RTOS.
  • QNX to present a demo of QNX fastboot technology for Intel Atom processors at embedded world booth #11-324.
  • NUREMBERG, Germany, March 3, 2009— Extending its support for Intel® low-power products, QNX Software Systems today announced that the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS) now supports the new options of the Intel® Atom™ processor Z5xx series platform, including a larger footprint and an industrial temperature range. Supported processors include the Intel Atom processors Z530P, Z520PT, Z510P, and Z510PT, as well as the Intel System Controller Hub (SCH) US15WP and Intel SCH US15WPT. Combined with the QNX Neutrino RTOS, these products offer a high-performance, power-efficient foundation for fanless automation and control systems, including systems that run in extreme temperature environments.

QNX support for the Intel Atom processor Z5xx series platform includes an HMI player based on Adobe Flash Lite 3.1, hardware-assisted 2D/3D graphics based on OpenGL ES, and the Intel C++ Compiler Professional Edition 11.0 for the QNX Neutrino RTOS.

The Intel C++ Compiler Professional Edition includes the Intel Integrated Performance Primitives (Intel IPP) Library, which provides optimized routines for multimedia, signal processing, and data communication. The compiler, which is integrated with the QNX Momentics® IDE, provides a significant performance gain over the standard GCC compiler. Developers can download the Intel C++ Compiler Professional Edition free, with community support, from the Intel Web site. (Commercial support is optional.)

QNX support for the Intel Atom processor Z5xx series platform also includes QNX fastboot technology, which eliminates the need for a BIOS on x86 platforms, thereby reducing system costs and dramatically improving instant-on performance. QNX fastboot technology recently won an “Award of Excellence, Most Innovative Software for the Intel Atom Processor” from the Intel Embedded and Communications Alliance. “By offering off-the-shelf support for the Intel Atom processor Z5xx series for embedded, QNX allows developers to cut development cycles while meeting the demands of environments such as networked process control, industrial transportation, building automation, SCADA, and portable computing,” said Kroy Zeviar, business alliance manager, QNX Software Systems.

“The new industrial temperature option for the Intel Atom processor Z5xx platform is ideal for designs to be used in rugged industrial automation environments,” said Jonathan Luse, director of marketing, Low Power Embedded Products Division, Intel. “And developers can use compelling software platforms, such as the QNX Neutrino RTOS, to maximize performance of these control and automation systems used within today’s digital factory.”

These Intel processors for embedded include groundbreaking power management technology, such as C6 state (Deep Power Down Technology), enhanced Intel SpeedStep® technology, CMOS Mode, and Split IO power supply. The Intel Atom processor Z5xx series is based on Intel 45nm high-k metal gate silicon technology, which reduces power consumption, increases switching speed, and increases transistor density over previous 65nm technology.

    Fastboot demo and technical presentation
This week at embedded world (booth #11-324), QNX will present a demo that shows how the QNX Neutrino RTOS can dramatically improve boot times on Intel Atom processors and other x86 platforms.

A QNX engineer will also deliver a technical presentation on “Fastboot Techniques for the x86 Architecture” today from 16:30 to 17:00, Session 1.8.
