Harman International Chooses QNX Neutrino RTOS for In-Car Telematics Products

OTTAWA and HANNOVER, September 25, 2002 - QNX Software Systems today announced that Harman International Industries, Incorporated (NYSE: HAR) has chosen the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS) and the QNX Momentics® development suite to build radio navigation systems for automakers such as Audi, BMW, DaimlerChrysler and Porsche. Harman based its decision on QNX's reputation of providing reliable and scalable RTOS technology as well as QNX's new comprehensive integrated development environment (IDE) based on the Eclipse platform.

Harman's highly sophisticated in-car radio navigation systems provide telematics, navigation, telephone, TV, DVD, games, superb audio, and Internet access. Working with Harman, QNX Software Systems will provide core operating systems software, integrated development tools, and support for key automotive specific components such as MOST (Media Oriented System Transport), IDB 1394, Bluetooth, and speech recognition, among others.

"QNX Software Systems understands that reliability and scalability will drive the next generation development of in-car telematics systems," said Dr. Erich Geiger, president and CEO, Harman Becker Automotive Systems and chief technology officer of Harman International Industries. "The technology platforms are moving quickly from the drawing board to the showroom floor, and QNX has achieved a significant leg up on other OS vendors because of its advanced microkernel technology and extensive partnerships."

The QNX Neutrino RTOS provides a fault-tolerant, dynamically upgradeable platform that lets automakers add new, revenue-generating telematics services to a vehicle long after it has left the production line. In addition, the highly integrated QNX Momentics development suite supports IBM's J9 Java Virtual Machine and Hitachi's SH-4R processor, which are key components in future devices built by Harman Becker Automotive Systems. Together, these technologies give automakers unparalleled flexibility in deploying in-car infotainment systems and next-generation telematics products.

"We're thrilled that Harman is basing their next-generation telematics products on QNX OS technology - technology that's been proven in everything from high-speed trains to the space shuttle," said Dan Dodge, CEO of QNX Software Systems. "Telematics systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and the QNX Neutrino RTOS can give Harman the scalability to integrate new features quickly while delivering the very high level of reliability demanded by auto manufacturers."
