QNX Multi-Core Tools Deliver Comprehensive Debug and Optimization for P.A. Semi PWRficient Platform

News at a Glance...

  • Joint solution combines P.A. Semi’s ultra low-power processor with industry-leading multi-core software platform from QNX.
  • Accelerates migration to multi-core through support for multiple multiprocessing models and advanced visualization tools.
  • QNX board support package (BSP) for the PWRficient Evaluation Kit now available.
  • OTTAWA and SANTA CLARA, CA, February 5, 2007 - QNX Software Systems, the industry leader in multi-core processing for embedded systems, and P.A. Semi, developer of the high-performance, low-power PWRficient™ processor family, announced today that the two companies will bring optimized multi-core development capability to the embedded market.

The joint solution combines P.A. Semi’s innovative ultra low-power PA6T-1682M PWRficient platform processor with the industry-leading multi-core development technology of QNX Software Systems. With this combined solution, developers will be able to select from asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP), symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) and an innovative QNX technology called bound multiprocessing (BMP), which combines the control of AMP with the simplified programming model and superior scalability offered by SMP. Developers can also take advantage of the QNX® Momentics® development suite, which offers the most advanced multi-core development tools available today.

By taking a holistic view of system behavior, QNX multi-core visualization tools can pinpoint problems unique to multi-core systems. They can, for example, help identify opportunities for parallelism, reduce unnecessary thread migration between cores, reduce excessive interprocess communication (IPC) between cores, and isolate complex resource-contention problems that often occur in multi-core environments. Moreover, they offer multiple levels of analysis to provide the most appropriate information for each phase of multi-core debugging and optimization.

“P.A. Semi’s dual-core PWRficient processors represent one of the lowest-power, most highly integrated offerings in the marketplace today,” said Romain Saha, netcom segment manager for QNX Software Systems. “The combination of P.A. Semi and QNX multi-core technology will enable developers to take full advantage of the benefits inherent to multi-core technology.”

“Together, the QNX Momentics multi-core development suite and QNX Neutrino® RTOS enable our customers to fully exploit the processing performance of our dual-core PWRficient processors while also accelerating their time to market,” said Sanjay Iyer, director of marketing for P.A. Semi.

The P.A. Semi PWRficient platform processor is engineered to deliver exceptional performance, peripheral connectivity and integration while consuming very little power, making it ideal for compute-intensive networking, wireless infrastructure, storage and military/aerospace markets. The PA6T-1682M device integrates two 2GHz Power Architecture processor cores, two DDR2 memory controllers, 2MB of L2 cache and a flexible I/O subsystem that supports eight PCI Express controllers, two 10-Gigabit Ethernet XAUI controllers and four Gigabit Ethernet SGMII controllers sharing 24 configurable serdes lanes. At 2GHz, the processor dissipates only 5W to 13W of total power under typical conditions.

    Availability
P.A. Semi works very closely with QNX Software Systems and offers a QNX board support package (BSP) for the PWRficient Evaluation Kit. Developers can obtain the QNX Momentics development suite directly from QNX Software Systems.
