QNX Supports New Sitara ARM Cortex-A8 Industrial Processors from Texas Instruments
|
OTTAWA, December 1, 2009 — QNX Software Systems today announced that the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS now supports the new Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) AM3505 and AM3517 ARM® Cortex™-A8 microprocessors (MPUs), the first two members of TI’s new Sitara™ family and the first ARM Cortex-A8 processor-based solutions optimized for industrial applications.
The AM35x MPUs offer a variety of device packages, industrial temperature options ( 40 to +85 degrees C), multiple on-chip peripherals (CAN, Ethernet MAC, USB 2.0 OTG PHY, etc.), and high computational performance at sub one-Watt power levels. The low power consumption eliminates the need for heat sinks and fans, allowing industrial developers to design silent, air-tight enclosures for harsh environments.
Developers can implement entire human machine interfaces (HMIs) in Adobe Flash since both the AM3505 and the AM3517 include a high-resolution display subsystem supported by the QNX Aviage® HMI Suite. The AM3517 builds on the AM3505 with a PowerVR™ SGX graphics engine from Imagination Technologies, which will allow developers to create hardware-accelerated 2D and 3D HMIs that leverage QNX Software Systems’ optimized support for the OpenVG and OpenGL® ES 1.1/2.0 graphical APIs.
The QNX Neutrino RTOS forms a key component of the QNX industrial software architecture, a complete platform that offers massive scalability, from deeply embedded headless devices, to distributed automation systems, to 2D/3D control and display units. The platform includes an RTOS, development tools, networking protocols, and a rich choice of file systems, as well as middleware for creating a wide range of HMIs. Proven in thousands of mission-critical applications, the QNX industrial software architecture is supported by a large ecosystem of technology partners providing industrial protocols, connectivity solutions, graphics technologies, I/O, peripherals, tools, and silicon.
QNX Software Systems also offers support for many other TI processors, including the TMS320DM355, TMS320DM644x, OMAP3503, OMAP3515, OMAP3525, and OMAP3530 processors.
“By taking advantage of the QNX industrial software architecture, customers using the AM3505 and AM3517 MPUs can create compelling, dynamic HMIs while leveraging the reliability and realtime performance of a field-proven, standards-based realtime operating system,” said John Gorman, OMAP35x product line manager, TI.
“The new TI AM3505 and AM3517 MPUs hit the sweet spot for industrial customers who need high performance at low power,” said Kroy Zeviar, business alliance manager, QNX Software Systems. “These new Sitara ARM Cortex A-8 solutions, combined with the already robust range of TI MPUs, make the TI portfolio a key part of our customer roadmaps.”
