What's in this package?

This package contains the following files:

  • base_directory/vmwareimages/qnx700.x86_64.7.0.0.nnnnnnnnnnnnn/fs/x86_64/fs.vmdk
  • base_directory/vmwareimages/qnx700.x86_64.7.0.0.nnnnnnnnnnnnn/ifs/x86_64/ifs.vmdk
  • base_directory/vmwareimages/qnx700.x86_64.7.0.0.nnnnnnnnnnnnn/x86_64/QNX_SDP.vmx
  • base_directory/vmwareimages/qnx700.x86_64.7.0.0.nnnnnnnnnnnnn/x86_64/QNX_SDP.vmxf

Using the virtual machine

We provide an ISO image of a QNX Neutrino runtime system that you can run as a virtual machine using:

  • VMware Workstation 12.0 or later (Linux, Windows)
  • VMware Player 12.0 or later (Linux, Windows)
  • VMware Fusion Pro 8.0 or later (macOS)

The software center installs the virtual machine in base_directory/vmimages/qnx700.x86_64.7.0.0.nnnnnnnnnnnnn/x86_64/QNX_SDP.vmx, where base_directory is where you installed QNX SDP.

To use the image, open the QNX_SDP.vmx file using VMware Workstation, VMware Player, or VMWare Fusion Pro.

To log in to QNX Neutrino, connect via SSH using qnxuser for both the username and password.

The qnxuser user is non-privileged. To perform any privileged operations, after you log in, use su to switch to the root user. Use the password root.

Known issues

These are the known issues when you run QNX Neutrino on a virtual machine.

  • Some older versions of VMware may show signs of instability. For example, you might get kernel faults that don't occur on real machines. You might also see messages such as The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. (Ref# 57058, J382252)
  • On your virtual machine, if you run io-pkt-v6-hc with the asix module (devnp-asix.so), and then plug and unplug the ASIX USB dongle on your host machine, the behavior is unpredictable and one of the following may occur:
    • the USB connection time-outs or USB initialization errors occur with the ASIX USB dongle
    • errors accessing the ASIX USB dongle
    • the io-pkt-v6-hc manager starts but no IP interface is available (ax0 isn't visible when you run ifconfig)
    • the io-pkt-v6-hc manager aborts or terminates with a core dump

    (Ref# J1683121)

Workaround: Run io-pkt-v6-hc with the asix module from a telnet connection instead of a console connection.

  • If your application records (captures) audio, it results in choppy audio and skewed duration times for the captured audio when run on the virtual machine. For example, it may take 7 seconds to capture 5 seconds of audio and when you play the captured audio, it has gaps and sounds choppy. This issue occurs because a guest system running in VMware emulates a separate timing scheme and an interrupt delivery mechanism that isn’t accurate compared to running QNX Neutrino on hardware. (Ref# J1691239)

Workaround: Capture audio directly on a hardware platform running QNX Neutrino instead of a virtual machine.

  • New: If you install and use the VMware package, the QNX Software Center’s Verify Installation feature may complain that your installation has issues. (Ref# J1679594)

Workaround: Don't launch VMWare using the installed image. Instead, copy the image and its related files to a writable location (e.g., your workspace or home directory) and run it from there. That way, the installed image remains intact and won't trigger a warning when you verify the installation. You can always replace your workspace copy with the original image from the installation by copying the image again.
