Abstracts

Can mobile devices work for mobility?

Speaker: Dr. Motoyuki Akamatsu, Director of Human Technology Research, Advanced Industrial Science and Technology

Dr. Akamatsu is an expert in the field of HMI design. In this talk, he explains the interaction between mobile devices and driver distraction and how that should inform vehicle HMI designs. Using current published studies and various research projects, he delves into the details of the distraction problem, and talks about possible guidelines to use when designing in-vehicle systems that integrate with the mobile experience.

HTML 5, Flash/AIR, Java, Android, Native: When to use what?

Speaker: Andy Gryc, Product Marketing Manager, QNX Software Systems

Developers today are faced with many options for application development. The question is how to select the programming environment that makes the most sense. This session highlights some of the considerations to take into account when targeting the QNX CAR application platform. The QNX OS and its composition manager allow developers to mix and match environments as well. This can reduce the effort required to do a full port and/or allow for performance-optimized solutions.

The Future for Automotive Silicon

Speaker: Lance Howarth, EVP Marketing, ARM

Recent years have seen significant changes in the automotive silicon ecosystem including the mergers of industry titans, the entrance of non-embedded desktop players, the consolidation of in-vehicle processors, and the collapse of the market for proprietary solutions. ARM has played an instrumental role, directly and indirectly, in impacting trends, players and alliances. Today, some consider ARM to be in a battle with Intel for domination of the embedded space including automotive. What does the future hold for ARM? What keeps their executives awake at night? What is ARM's view on software platforms of the future?

The Car as a Managed Device

Speaker: Alex Kinsella, Team Lead, Product Management, Research in Motion

With the advent of 4G connectivity, the industry is considering how to provision and manage in-vehicle systems deployed in the field. Whether its downloading a new app, booking an appointment for service, or downloading a software maintenance update - connectivity means that customers get a transparent experience without having to visit the dealer. As part of RIM, QNX is in a unique position to leverage and re-purpose RIM enterprise or carrier based solutions for the automotive market. Two of these include BlackBerry AppWorld and BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The first holds the possibility of resolving the application store challenge faced by car companies today and the second will enable the car to be managed and provisioned as another node on the carrier network. RIM and QNX will co-present providing an overview of the technologies at hand and how they can be repurposed for the benefit of the automotive market.

Connectivity in Automotive

Speaker: Andrew Poliak, Director, Automotive Business Development, QNX Software Systems

Connectivity remains a hot topic in automotive and its scope increases constantly. The desire to connect to personal devices remains prevalent and consumer expectations about what they can do with that connection is expanding beyond content rendering. There are a number of new connectivity paradigms coming into play such as NFC (near field communications) which will also impact consumer expectations. In parallel, the desire to integrate functionality of vehicle systems into a single unified experience is impacting how these in-vehicle systems connect. And finally, connectivity to the cloud remains an ongoing area of investment, along with the notion of location based services and cloud based applications and content. In this session, we'll cover these connectivity trends and share our thoughts on relevance, timelines for productions, and what's coming next.

Panel: The World of Automotive

Speaker: Guest Panellists

This panel considers the question of automotive as a global homogeneous versus regionally diverse market. Which trends apply on a global basis? Is the industry addressing these trends in a common manner or are various geographies responding to trends differently? Are some regions impacted sooner than others? Can regional differences be correlated to categories of trends? The panel will discuss trends in technology, value chain evolution, driver distraction, connectivity, cloud based services, content, provisioning and application deployments.

The Road Ahead - QNX CAR 2.0 & Beyond

Speaker: Dan Dodge, CEO, QNX Software Systems

QNX revolutionized the evaluation and prototyping of its application platform, BSPs, acoustic processing and third party software with the initial release of QNX CAR. Two years later, the company is getting ready to demo QNX CAR 2.0 at CES in January 2012. This session provides an insightful look at the technical roadmap and the program going forward. Eighteen months into the acquisition by RIM, QNX will highlight the value this has created for our product portfolio, our mindshare and our customers, especially in automotive.
