Jim Alfred
Director, Product Management, Certicom
Jim Alfred

Jim Alfred is Director of Product Management at Certicom Corp, a subsidiary of Research In Motion. Jim has been involved with embedded technology and the move to smart, connected devices for over 24 years.

Jim's team at Certicom is helping connected manufacturers and service providers protect their content, devices and applications with government approved security – from cryptography libraries and security protocols to end-to-end security solutions for a number of markets.  Jim has most recently focused on Certicom’s ZigBee and AMI initiatives and working with his parent company RIM to “mobilize” energy management.

Jim is a Sloan Fellow from London Business School, where he earned an MSc. in Business.  Jim earned his MSc. in engineering from Stanford University and his BSc. in engineering from Purdue University.

Robert Barnes

Robert Barnes

Robert Barnes has a degree in Electronic Engineering and has been an ARM employee for over eleven years in various technical and commercial roles. Robert is now responsible for developing ARM's European embedded business. He offers a broad knowledge of the embedded space and continues to drive local activities with key silicon vendors, distributors, ecosystem partners and OEM's.

Stephen Bashford

Stephen Bashford

Stephen has over 20 years experience in embedded software development. He has worked on a variety of projects for the manufacturing and commercial industries. In the last few years this work has included medical projects for patient healthcare and diagnostic equipment companies – working on complex systems and ensuring that MPC Data meets the strict approval processes for this industry. Stephen’s role is Quality Manager for MPC Data and he has recently introduced an ISO 13485 based Quality Management System - achieving certification in 2011.

Based in Cambridge, UK, Frazer Bennett is a partner with PA’s Global Technology Practice. He holds a specific focus on the challenges of realising the vision of mobile healthcare. With twenty years experience in mobile telecommunications, and supported by a world-class team of healthcare experts, Frazer works on the development of real-world mobile health solutions that are improving people’s lives.

Phil Buckley
Deputy Managing Director, MPC Data
Phil Buckley

Phil has been with MPC Data for 15 years and is an owner-director. He has 26 years experience in embedded software gained in industrial control, aerospace, automotive and medical systems. Phil’s current role is Deputy Managing Director at MPC Data and his responsibilities include sales, business development, quality assurance and customer liaison. He has been responsible for winning some of the largest contracts for the company including more than 30 man-years of medical projects and has championed the implementation of ISO 13485 procedures into the company's quality system.

Dr. Gari Clifford
University of Oxford, Department of Engineering Science

Dr. Gari Clifford is part of the faculty at the University of Oxford in the Department of Engineering Science where he is a University Lecturer and Fellow of Kellogg College. Dr. Clifford is responsible for the Intelligent Patient Monitoring Group at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME). He is also the Associate Director of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Healthcare Innovation, a major UK government (RCUK)-funded centre for teaching translational biomedical engineering.

Dr. Clifford’s research and teaching interests lie in Intelligent Patient Monitoring and Signal Processing/Data Fusion. The main application areas in health are Critical Care, Sleep & Resource-Constrained Environments, such as in developing countries.

Until recently he was a Principal Research Scientist in the Laboratory for Computational Physiology at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences . He has studied Physics and Electronics for his undergraduate degree, and has a Masters in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics from Southampton University and a Ph.D. in Neural Networks and Biomedical Engineering from Oxford University. He has taught at Oxford, MIT and Harvard, and is currently an Instructor in Biomedical Engineering at MIT. Dr. Clifford is also a Senior Member of the IEEE and has worked in industry on the design and production of several CE- and FDA-approved medical devices.

Sebastien Cuvelier Mussalian MBA, BEng (Hon)

Sebastien Cuvelier Mussalian

Sebastian is part of Team Consulting’s engineering team, focusing on embedded system development and electro-mechanical design. He has worked on developing numerous products for Team’s global client base that utilise his expertise in designing embedded, integrated and robust systems for the medical sector. Recently, Sebastien has been developing a normothermic liver transplant system for a UK start-up. Throughout his experience at Team, he has worked on a wide range of medical devices from inhalers and auto-injectors to large-scale diagnostic systems.

Sebastien has an MBA and BEng(Hon) in electronic and computer engineering from Brighton University and has worked as a multidisciplinary project manager for a world leading instrumentation company, an engineer for the world leader of capacitive sensor technology and tomographic image processing, which was contracted by the MoD.

Chris Hobbs

Chris Hobbs

Chris Hobbs is a kernel developer at QNX, specializing in "sufficiently-available" software: software created with the minimum development effort to meet the availability and reliability needs of the customer; and in producing safe software (in conformance with IEC61508 SIL3). In addition to his software development work, Chris is a flying instructor, a singer with a particular interest in Schubert's Lieder, and the author of several books, including Learning to Fly in Canada (2000) and The Largest Number Smaller than Five (2007). His blog, Software Musings, focuses "primarily on software and analytical philosophy".

Chris Hobbs earned a B.Sc., Honours in Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Philosophy at the University of London's Queen Mary and Westfield College.

Mark Pitchford

Mark Pitchford

Mark Pitchford has over 25 years’ experience in software development for engineering applications. He has worked on many significant industrial and commercial projects in development and management, both in the UK and internationally including extended periods in Canada and Australia. For the past 10 years, he has specialised in software test and works throughout Europe and beyond as a Field Applications Engineer with LDRA.
