Biospace - Body Composition Analyzer

Biospace makes huge leaps in helping to treat obesity – and selects QNX Neutrino for its latest model, the InBody 4.0.

Obesity is not a simple condition of eating too much. It is now recognized that obesity is a serious, chronic disease that is on the verge of surpassing smoking as #1 cause of preventable death. The cost of medical care for treating this disease is insurmountable. As a result, it has become increasingly important to find ways to reduce the medical costs associated with treating this disease. This is where Biospace comes to play.

Biospace with advanced technology that obtained the first FDA approval as a Korean company for the technical excellence and holds the patent for the world’s leading technology for body composition analysis.

InBody4.0 is Biospace’s latest body composition analyzer that features Biospace’s patented BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) technology. It produces highly accurate measurements of the body fat, protein, mineral, and fluid (the four components of the human body) within two minutes. Therefore, given the advancement of this product, it is been widely used in hospitals, obesity clinics and fitness centers.

Critical requirements

Choosing an OS for such an advanced medical device is no easy process: there are myriad requirements to consider. One of the most important is, reliability. It was very important that the OS was robust, mature and real-time - one that had a history of fault tolerance in critical applications.

One of the biggest obstacles for Biospace’s R&D team for previous models was the development period took a long time due to trivial bugs causing critical problems to the whole system. Therefore, for the next-generation InBody 4.0 model, Biospace was looking to solve this problem by applying an OS that would help reduce the time and cost of the product equilibrium by selecting an OS that can track bugs on-the-fly.

“We selected QNX Neutrino as the OS for the InBody 4.0 line because of its stability” states Kichul Cha, CEO, Biospace. Under QNX Neutrino, every driver, application, protocol stack, and file system runs outside the kernel, in the safety of memory-protected user space. As a result, virtually any component can fail — and be automatically restarted — without affecting other components or the kernel.

“By using QNX Neutrino we were able to reduce the development period and equilibrium. If customers require diverse function according to their needs, it is possible to cope with those requests fast since it can be easily added and modified on each module. It means customers’ satisfaction is elevated and InBody 4.0 is getting more popular in the market.”  Pleased with the results, Biospace plans to use QNX Neutrino in the development of new models.
