QNX OS for Automotive Safety
Designed to meet the growing need for functional safety in the automotive market, the QNX® OS for Automotive Safety is certified to ISO 26262 Automotive Safety Integrity Level D (ASIL D), and IEC 61508 SIL3. It provides a reliable platform for automotive components with safety requirements, such as digital instrument clusters with critical warning displays or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that have crucial impact on driving decisions.
The QNX® Neutrino® RTOS is a natural choice for building safety-critical products. As a true microkernel OS, it provides inherent protection and isolation for safety-critical software components – regardless of whether the system comprises of only safety-related components or a mix of safety and non-safety components. For example, with proper separation and isolation, the malfunctioning of the RPM gauge component on a digital instrument cluster cannot impact the master warning light component, even when both are running on the same hardware. In QNX Neutrino RTOS, each component remains isolated and executes in memory-protected user space. QNX adaptive partitioning further safeguards the operation of the safety-critical components by ensuring they are never starved of CPU cycles.
Certified by TÜV Rheinland, the QNX OS for Automotive Safety not only gives automakers confidence in the selection of a trustworthy foundation, but also helps them control the time and effort associated with safety certification. Safety certification of sophisticated systems containing both hardware and software can be a long and arduous process. Using a pre-certified component, especially when the component is of key importance to the overall integrity of the system, can contribute to a greater level of safety and will certainly make the system certification much easier. The certification covers the Neutrino RTOS kernel and the standard libc interface, which is 100% compatible with the API found in QNX Software Development Platform 6.5.0 Service Pack 1. The product is supported on ARMLEv7 architecture, the most popular hardware platform for the automotive market.
The TÜV Rheinland certification also includes the qualification of the toolchain – the C compiler, linker, and assembler that is an essential part of the QNX® Momentics® Tool Suite. Classified as TCL 3, the tool chain has been certified to be compliant with the requirements for supporting tools according to ISO 26262, and IEC 61508.
