With recent advances in automation, software is no longer a small part of electro-mechanical systems but the underlying technology providing functional safety for products in many market segments. The requirement for software functional safety has become a critical topic in industrial automation, transportation, nuclear energy generation and other markets. IEC 61508 is widely accepted as the basic standard, on which sector-specific standards are built.

This webinar introduces you to the IEC 61508 standard and provides insights on the challenges associated with designing and building a product to meet its stringent requirements. Join us for this session as we draw on the experience gained during the certification of QSS' Neutrino kernel and development processes to IEC 61508 at Safety Integrity Level 3.

Speaker biographies:
Yi Zheng is the product manager responsible for the safety product certified to IEC 61508 SIL3 at QNX Software Systems. She also manages the QNX Neutrino RTOS and the QNX Momentics tool suite. Prior to joining QNX, she worked at Entrust Technologies, Autodesk and Nortel Networks, designing a wide range of software applications. She holds a Bachelor's in Computer Science and a Master's in Business Administration.

Chris Hobbs has been a software developer since the days when mainframes had 64 kbytes of memory and still has a manual paper-tape punch on his desk. He now works almost exclusively in Python and C. His background is in mathematics and he has worked in many fields, including telecommunications, where the availability and reliability of software is crucial. His long-term interest has been in the simulation and modelling of the non-functional characteristics (availability, reliability, safety) of software. He is the author of several papers and books (including "A Practical Approach to WBEM/CIM Management") and currently works within the kernel development team at QNX Software Systems.
