Nuclear Industry Leader UEIP Chooses McObject’s eXtremeDB And QNX Neutrino RTOS for Process Control, SCADA

For Immediate Release

Issaquah, WA—February 6, 2004— Ural Electrochemical Integrated Plant (UEIP), the world’s largest uranium enrichment enterprise and manufacturer of advanced process control technology for the nuclear industry, will integrate McObject’s eXtremeDBO™ in-memory database system and the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS within its process control systems and equipment.

In addition, UEIP announced its decision to use eXtremeDB as the real-time embedded database in its SCADA system for the nuclear industry.

eXtremeDB, which is designed to meet the growing data management needs of embedded devices, will “shorten the development cycle for the UEIP’s process control systems and significantly contribute to their performance and reliability,” said Alexander Rodionov, UEIP senior product manager. As a main-memory database, eXtremeDB eliminates performance overhead associated with disk-based databases and is extremely frugal in its RAM and CPU demands, while providing high-performance transactional data access within controllers and between controllers and external systems.

And while many database APIs present a significant learning curve, Rodionov praised the eXtremeDB interface as easy-to-learn. With eXtremeDB, most database methods are generated when a given database schema is compiled, and are therefore intuitive to designers and optimized for the project’s exact needs.

“Reliability, safety and predictability are always major requirements of advanced industrial control and automation systems, especially in the nuclear industry,” Rodionov said. “In addition to meeting those needs, eXtremeDB provides us with the extra benefit of a well-organized tool set and a streamlined architecture that promise to reduce development time significantly,” he said.

The QNX Neutrino RTOS provides an ideal software foundation for industrial automation equipment due to its fault-tolerance, scalability, and real-time performance, the UEIP senior product manager said. The QNX Neutrino RTOS ensures reliability even in the most demanding settings, and supports the UEIP project’s near-zero latency responsiveness requirements, he said.

“Recently, eXtremeDB has been integrated into several high-profile mission-critical applications, often running atop the solid foundation provided by the QNX Neutrino RTOS,” said Andrei Gorine, McObject co-founder and principal architect. “The UEIP selection highlights the performance and reliability afforded by the joint McObject-QNX solution, and affirms McObject’s commitment to enhancing industrial control systems through real-time data management.”

“For over 23 years, QNX OS technology has set the industry standard for software reliability and realtime performance — a fact acknowledged by Fortune magazine, which named QNX’s co-founders ‘heroes of manufacturing’ in 2003,” said Linda Campbell, director of strategic alliances at QNX Software Systems. “QNX Neutrino and eXtremeDB have become a popular, and very powerful, combination for realtime control applications, and we look forward to working with McObject on future projects.”
