QNX Names ‘Automotive’ Category Winners for University Application Development Competition in China
Joint initiative from QNX and RIM created to help young talent in China with application development skills for the mobile and automotive industriesBEIJING, November 19, 2012 — QNX Software Systems Limited , a global leader in software platforms for the automotive and embedded systems markets, today announced the winners in the automotive category of the BlackBerry® application competition for students in China, which was jointly organized with Research In Motion (RIM). The winning applications were built with HTML5, the open Web standard that provides a common platform for automakers and mobile app developers to work together.
QNX Software Systems and RIM hosted the competition as part of RIM’s university program in China. The program aims to nurture the mobile development community in China by giving students the opportunity to make their work available to real-world industries. In order to encourage students to apply their creativity to the convergence of cars and smartphones, an automotive category was included in the competition.
QNX Software Systems announced the winning automotive applications during an award ceremony attended by the China Ministry of Education and by Canadian Embassy officials.
Grand prize winner:
- “DongWei” (HuNan University) — lets car occupants search for nearby restaurants using a variety of search criteria
- “Cloud Vehicle” (Tsinghua University) — displays a variety of information generated by the car itself and by cloud-based services
- “BITEV” (Beijing Institute of Technology) — lets electric car drivers manage driving distance and battery consumption
- “Singing Pet” (Tsinghua University) — combines a variety of entertainment and fuel logging features
- “Finder” (SouthWest Jiaotong University) — social media app for locating and interacting with friends
“We were very impressed with the winning applications in the automotive category, which are well-designed and demonstrate sensitivity to automotive requirements,” said Jin Xu, global education program manager, QNX Software Systems. “We encouraged participants to use HTML5 for the automotive category, as HTML5 is becoming the standard of choice for bridging the mobile and automotive worlds. Above all, we are pleased to help young engineers develop skills needed by the automotive industry.”
